The Project
Dropshop is proud to present Beachers from Cuban-born artist Diango Hernández, a curated selection of paintings and editions on view at Phillips’ Los Angeles gallery alongside Frieze Los Angeles. The title of the drop derives from Playeros, the largest painting in the presentation—a term that in Cuba describes a deep, enduring attachment to the beach.
The presentation brings together paintings from Hernández’s Olaísmo and Pools series. Shaped by waves, distortion, and fluidity, these works explore water as a space of memory, movement, and contemplation, where the beach is understood not as scenery, but as a lived condition.
The visual and conceptual language of Olaísmo evolved over more than a decade, with the wave functioning as structure, metaphor, and method. Its surfaces are unstable—displaced, refracted, optically disturbed—offering not a direct image of the world but one filtered through water, where memory ripples and shifts. In Beachers, these works frame the beach not as picturesque scenery, but as a psychological and historical condition—an unstable threshold between departure and return.
The Pool series translates the open sea of Olaísmo into architectural space. The ocean is contained, designed, and framed as a swimming pool—an imagined yet convincing environment shaped by desire. Infused with fantasies of luxury, escape, and pleasure, these spaces feel both real and aspirational. If Olaísmo embodies the force of the wave, Pools reflects its containment—open horizon and structured space together defining the beach as both emotional landscape and a constructed environment.

The Artist
Germany-based Cuban artist Diango Hernández emerged in the early 1990s, during the economic crisis that followed the collapse of the Soviet Union, actively engaging in collective initiatives within Cuba’s cultural scene, co-founding Ordo Amoris Cabinet (OAC), an artistic duo that quickly gained international recognition.
In the early 2000s, Hernández relocated to Europe, where he developed a practice that positioned him as one of the foremost heirs to the American conceptual legacy. In 2009 he was awarded the prestigious Rubens Prize, recognizing his outstanding contribution to contemporary art. His work, exhibited internationally, explores cultural identity and the political forces that shape everyday life.
His work has been the subject of major solo exhibitions at Kunsthalle Basel, Neuer Aachener Kunstverein, and Museum für Gegenwartskunst Siegen, among others, and has been featured in leading international biennials including the Venice Biennale, the Biennale of Sydney, and the São Paulo Biennial.
With over 1.4 million Instagram followers, Hernández (@diango.hernandez) was an early pioneer in integrating social media into his artistic practice, using the platform since 2015 as an essential creative and conceptual tool.
