The Project

Dropshop has partnered with Donald Sultan and LITO Editions to release Poppies in Cement, an exclusive edition of multi-dimensional artworks, which are the result of meticulous experimentation with new technologies and craftsmanship. Originally inspired by a trip to Flanders, poppies came to play a central role in Sultan's work.

Throughout Sultan’s career, he has been drawn to everyday materials which could be picked up in his local hardware store -- ranging from concrete to Masonite to automotive paints. Lending character and affordability, these media allow him to make large scale works with thickness and weight.

Poppies in Cement revisits Sultan's studio practice, incorporating industrial materials into the art of edition making -- offering a contrast of glossy automotive paint with a textured, cement overlay across five different colorways.

The Artist

DONALD SULTAN (b. 1951, Asheville, North Carolina) earned his BFA from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, and his MFA from the School of the Art Institute in Chicago before establishing himself in New York in 1975. Since his solo debut in 1977, Sultan has distinguished himself as a painter, printmaker, and sculptor, renowned for seamlessly merging traditional and modern elements. Sultan’s large-scale paintings, which include industrial disasters and still lifes, are bold compositions that employ industrial materials such as tar and concrete, which contribute to their unique texture and character. He describes his works as a blend of basic geometric and organic forms with a constituent purity; they have left an indelible mark on contemporary art. His subjects evolve organically, making powerful statements amid abstraction. Sultan’s works, showcased in solo and group exhibitions worldwide, are featured in prestigious permanent collections, including the Dallas Museum of Art, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art and Museum of Modern Art, New York.
