The Project
Two to Tango, marks Emmanuel Taku’s editions debut, graphically reinterpreting his distinct approach to portraiture through elaborately layered screenprints with intricate collage elements. The saturation color and density of ink achieved with more than 20 colors per print showcase the artist’s adept use of tone to create an image that sits at the intersection of depth and flatness, creating a visual tension that draws in the viewer.
Taku adorns the head of his figures with collaged clippings from magazines and newspapers, relying on his intuition to isolate words that connect to the subjects and composition. Printers at Brand X meticulously crafted die-cut printed elements selecting techniques to best embody the inherent nature of the source materials. Varnish was added to the words taken from magazines to capture the sheen of their printed pages and Kozo paper was used to for the newspaper elements, left matte, to manifest the fibrous nature of newsprint.
Textiles are at the center of Taku’s work, intimately referencing his family through the patterned fabrics of dresses sewn by his mother and paisley designs favored by his sister. Printed with glossy enamel, the delicate floral patterns are slightly raised above the paper’s surface as they dance across the subject’s clothes. The florals run uniformly across the image without adhering to the folds and dimensionality of the garments. The pronounced and abstracted motif adds texture to the print, evoking the artist’s mixed-media practice and channeling his ethos through the print medium.

The Artist
Emmanuel Taku, (b. 1986, Ghana) is a graduate in Visual Arts and Textiles from the Ghanatta Institute of Art and Design. Taku’s portraits capture Black subjects that radiate vitality, emphasizing the strength of a united community. Often inspired by fashion poses in magazines, Taku selects subjects of interest, highlighting the figurative elements by selecting colors that best capture the spirit of his subjects. Taku’s silk-screening technique reflects his love for Ghanian textiles: patterns which were often worn by his mother and sister. The artist cuts and pastes fragments of local newspapers to highlight the skin of his subjects, thereby including traces of the country’s history on the canvas. With this technique, Taku is hoping to document what is happening currently around him as he is creating, explaining that he hopes that ‘anyone who sees my paintings a hundred years to come will still be able to have an idea of what happened during Taku’s era’.
Works by Emmanuel Taku are held in prominent global public collections including the Long Museum, Shanghai, HE Art Museum, Foshan, Fosun Foundation, Shanghai, K11 Art Foundation, Hong Kong, ICA Museum, Miami, Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art, Overland Park, Kansas, with Entanglement and Got You in the permanent collection of the Philadelphia Museum of Art.

Brand X Editions
Master printer Robert Blanton grew up in Louisville, Kentucky and studied painting and printmaking at Western Kentucky University before moving to New York in the early 1970's to obtain his MFA at Pratt University. There he began his career as a printmaker, collaborating on projects with Robert Rauschenberg, James Rosenquist, Frank Stella and other artists. In 1979 Blanton founded Brand X Editions.
Brand X Editions prints and publishes editions with its artist and gallery partners, practicing the craft of silkscreen based printmaking while expanding the medium's vocabulary through its inventive experimentation.
Guided by its intensely collaborative approach, Brand X seeks to resolve the creative tensions presented by each new project and realize the artist’s ultimate vision.
In early 2024, the Brand X Archive was established at the Philadelphia Museum of Art.
