The Project

Offered in glossy kaleidoscope of five color variants, Kenny Scharf’s Scary Guy multiples, published by Lio Malca and fabricated by ToyQube, are playful and compelling sculptures that capture a whimsical character at the center of the artist’s most enduring and iconic imagery. The sculpture’s curvilinear form highlights Scary Guy’s cartoon-like quality, with the finish adding dynamism as the reflective surface animates the work and invites the viewer into Scharf’s Pop Surrealist environment.

Creating three-dimensional art objects has endured as an important element of Scharf’s practice. From painting boomboxes and televisions in the early 1980s to monumental installations worldwide, he has long embraced the style of ‘psychedelic conceptualism’.

These intimate sculptural multiples are a natural progression for the artist, creating an accessible opportunity to add Scharf’s vibrant gestural works to any collection. The Scary Guy motif has adorned neighborhoods across New York taking the form of street art on the Lower East Side, a monumental sculpture on the Chelsea High Line, and the subject of many paintings by the artist.

The Artist

Kenny Scharf (b. 1958, Los Angeles) has been an integral part of the New York City cultural and artistic movement since the 1980s, where he honed his practice alongside artists such as Jean-Michel Basquiat and Keith Haring. The influence of graffiti, comics, advertising, and Pop culture is present throughout his oeuvre and forms both a hallmark of his style and a historical context for his works. The irreverent and fun characters he creates and the bright colors he utilizes across mediums make his aesthetic unmistakable.

Considered to be the founder of Pop Surrealism, Scharf is famous for his street art murals, custom objects, collages, and collaborations with iconic brands such as Dior. Kenny Scharf's works have been exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Hammer Museum in Los Angeles, and the Perez Art Museum in Miami, to name a few, and are held in prominent public collections such as the Whitney Museum of American Art and the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, among others.
