The Project
Dropshop has partnered with Peter Halley and LITO Editions to release Color, Nine Times II, an exclusive edition of multi-dimensional artworks. The result of meticulous experimentation with new technologies and craftsmanship has produced Halley's hand-painted textured surface digitally rendered and “cloned” nine times. Inspired by Halley’s Cell Grid paintings, a series that began in 2014, the work is available in a limited edition of 35. The edition offers the tactility of Halley’s iconic textured paintings combined with intense and vibrating colors.
The texture of Color, Nine Times II is informed by Halley’s use of Roll-A-Tex in his paintings (a low-budget paint additive seen in popcorn ceilings). Halley challenged LITO Editions to “clone" this material, repeating the nine individual cells on metal frames, which were then bolted together into a tightly packed contra-punctual grid, an effect heightened by the arrangement of each cell at a different level of relief. Reflecting on the work, the artist noted that “all nine panels have the same, identical texture.”
This edition has been conceived through digital processes — to create the texture, relief, and structure of the work — and then hand-painted. The signature palette of “Day-Glo” colors were mixed in Peter Halley’s Studio. The edition was then painted at the LITO Tech Lab — a large space in Austria. Each artwork required nine hours of technical engineering and printing, followed by 16 hours of work by hand.

The Artist
Peter Halley (b.1953, New York) came to prominence as a central figure of the Neo-Conceptualist movement of the 1980s. His paintings redeploy the language of geometric abstraction to explore the organization of social space in the digital era. Since the 1980s, Halley’s lexicon has included three elements: “prisons” and “cells,” connected by “conduits,” which are used in his paintings to explore the technologically determined space and pathways that regulate daily life.
Halley has been the subject of major exhibitions at the Musée d'art moderne Grand-Duc Jean, Luxembourg (2023); Dallas Contemporary (2021); Schirn Kunsthalle, Frankfurt (2016); Musée d’Art Moderne Saint-Etienne Métropole (2014); Kitakyushu Municipal Museum of Art, Japan and Museum Folkwang, Essen (1998); Museum of Modern Art, New York (1997); Dallas Museum of Art (1995); Des Moines Art Center (1992); CAPC — Musée d'Art Contemporain de Bordeaux, Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, Madrid, and Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam (1991); Museum Haus Esters, Krefeld, and Institute of Contemporary Art, London (1989).
LITO Editions
Founded in 2022, LITO is a forward-thinking printmaking company on a mission to widen access to art through new, pioneering technologies. Based in Bregenz, Austria, LITO and the LITO Technology Lab have developed state-of-the-art, patented technology to create prints with extreme precision of unparalleled quality.
Color, Nine Times II is the result of Peter Halley’s experimentation with an entirely new process and tool using LITO’s Hi-Rnd© proprietary technology.
LITO collaborates with leading contemporary artists and prints textures, colors, and certain effects on paintings, such as reliefs and brushstrokes at multiple scales, to create and recreate original artworks.
Peter Halley comments: “I have always been fascinated by new digital technology. I always assumed it would someday be possible to recreate the texture of paintings or other textured surfaces digitally. But when I first saw a sample of LITO’s realisation of the surface of one of my paintings, I was stunned by the accuracy of the texture — as if the future had suddenly arrived.”
