The Project

Susumu Kamijo’s exclusive drop of two masterfully printed screenprints introduces his newly expanded visual vocabulary to the editions market. With Wish I was here and Two of Us, Kamijo introduces collectors to his new subjects and compositional strategies while preserving the vibrant, graphic style that has become his signature. Here, Kamijo turns his attention to flowers, a classical motif employed as a fresh vehicle for exploring gesture, color, and surface.

The compositions artfully contrast densely packed clusters of blossoms atop slender stems against sparse, minimally articulated backgrounds. Kamijo renders botanical forms with exaggerated, voluminous petals that frame stamens and pistils rendered in meticulous detail. Balancing this precision with the planes of color that shape the surrounding petals introduces a taut visual tension, complicating the conventional perception of floral imagery as merely decorative or innocuous. Long associated with still-life painting, the flowers of Kamijo’s compositions recall the lush arrangements of Dutch Old Masters and the refined simplicity of Japanese ukiyo-e prints.

Printed by master printer Keigo Takahashi in Brooklyn, New York, each impression is meticulously layered with over 40 colors to build up color and texture that mimics the artist’s distinctive paint applications. With these editions, Kamijo crafts compelling compositions with sustained visual attention that maps the subtle threshold between representation and abstraction.

The Artist

Susumu Kamijo (b. 1975, Nagano, Japan) received a BFA from the University of Oregon in 2000, and an MFA from the University of Washington in 2002. Kamijo brings his unique and spirited vision to life through his vivid and playful depictions of the natural world, most notably through his depictions of poodles. Kamijo is critically admired for graphic compositions featuring these abstracted poodles, using them as vehicles for an ongoing exploration of pattern, color, and surface. In recent series, Kamijo has incorporated new components—birds and foliage—expanding his deceptively charming visual vocabulary. Born in Japan and now based in Brooklyn, New York, Kamijo’s work has been featured in numerous exhibitions throughout the world, earning him wide recognition and acclaim. Kamijo’s work has been the subject of solo presentations both stateside and abroad, including recent exhibitions at Venus Over Manhattan, New York; Perrotin, Paris and Seoul; Jack Hanley Gallery, New York; GNYP Gallery, Berlin; Stems Gallery, Brussels; Masahiro Maki Gallery, Tokyo and Marvin Gardens, Queens. Kamijo lives and works in Brooklyn, New York.
